How to Care for Your Jewellery and Keep It Looking New
Small changes to storage, cleaning and daily wear can protect the finish and structure of your jewellery.
Most jewellery damage is gradual. Friction, moisture, perfume and hurried storage can dull a surface or weaken a setting long before a problem becomes visible. A few consistent habits are more useful than occasional aggressive cleaning.
Put jewellery on last
Apply fragrance, lotion, hair products and makeup before wearing jewellery, then allow them to dry. Remove pieces before showering, swimming, exercise and household cleaning. Water alone is not always the concern; chlorine, salt, soap residue and repeated moisture can affect finishes and threads.
Store pieces separately
Use a dry pouch or lined compartment for each piece. Chains should be fastened before storage to reduce tangling. Pearls and softer stones benefit from separation from harder metal edges. Keep jewellery away from direct sunlight, humid bathrooms and open dressing trays where dust collects.
Clean with restraint
- Wipe frequently worn pieces with a clean, soft cloth.
- Follow the material-specific care instructions supplied with the piece.
- Avoid abrasive pastes, stiff brushes and unverified home remedies.
- Have loose stones, bent posts and unreliable clasps assessed before wearing.
Before storing an important piece, look at it under good light. Early attention to a loose setting or damaged fastening is usually simpler than repairing loss. Good care should be gentle, regular and appropriate to the actual material.
